Flatland – Bradley Crump (March 21, 2018)

My presentation will consist of a short introduction to Flatland, an idea presented by A Abbott in the late 1800’s. We live in three dimensional space. That is, we have freedom of three ranges of motion: Forward/backward, Up/Down, Left/Right, and we can reach any point in our space with a combination of these motions. I’ll start by describing these motions and what it would mean for some object to be four dimensional. In an effort to explain I’ll present the Flatland analogy. What would it mean for a 3D object to pass through a 2D space, how might a 2D sentient being interpret such an event, and can we generalize this analogy to 3 and 4 dimensional space?
